SHERIFFS OFFICE IMPLEMENTS NEW REHABILITATION PROGRAMS
Yesterday, members with the Stone County Sheriff's Office attended the annual jail conference where Stone County was recognized for establishing a GED program in the county jail. This program started last year and was geared toward non-violent offenders in an effort to offer rehabilitation to those serving time prior to their release.
While this program is selective and not all inmates qualify, studies have shown that those who participate in education programs during incarceration have up to a 30% lower chance of recidivism, essentially making our community a safer place. Education and work programs for inmates can also reduce misconduct during incarceration as well as offering other benefits.
Special thanks to Sergeant Deputy Michael Stewart along with Pastor Finis Brewer and Instructor Karen Brewer for spearheading this program and its development. All three were asked to speak at the conference regarding the program and its success. Their hard work and dedication have proven to be a success as the program continues to develop and become more successful, thus encouraging other inmates to better themselves and the community.
The Sheriff's Office is currently working on implementing other programs such as faith based drug rehabilitation classes, domestic violence, and anger management as we move forward. This, in conjunction with the trash pickup, garden, and cemetery cleanup programs will continue to better serve our county while striving to make it a safer place for all.
